ULUNDI, 4 June 2025 – The KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta), Reverend Thulasizwe Buthelezi, has deployed Disaster Response teams to address a significant fire at the Kennedy Road Informal Settlement in Durban.
Emergency services, including fire and rescue personnel and the South African Police Service, are currently on-site, working to evacuate residents and bring the blaze under control.
The cause of the fire and the full extent of the damage are yet to be determined. It is also unconfirmed at this time whether there have been any injuries to residents within the informal settlement.
MEC Buthelezi has instructed the Provincial Disaster Management Centre to coordinate the provincial response. This coordination will ensure that relevant government departments and social partners are engaged to expedite the provision of interim relief to affected residents.
