FOUR BODIES RECOVERED AS SEARCH AND RESCUE EFFORTS CONTINUE DESPITE INCLEMENT WEATHER

Verulam, 13 December 2025 – KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Reverend Thulasizwe Buthelezi, today supported the rescue and recovery efforts at the site of the tragic building collapse in Verulam, where search and rescue teams continue working tirelessly under inclement weather conditions.

MEC Buthelezi reaffirmed government’s commitment to account for every person:
“Our disaster management teams will not rest until all individuals are recovered. We appreciate the additional support from the Western Cape’s specialised K9 unit, which strengthens our search capacity.”

The MEC was joined by Minister of Public Works and Infrastructure Dean Macpherson, KZN Public Works MEC Martin Meyer, and eThekwini Mayor Cyril Xaba, who collectively praised the dedication of emergency teams.

Minister Macpherson expressed his support, stating:
“We extend our full support to disaster-management teams and emergency services as they continue with the extremely difficult and dangerous work of reaching those still trapped. We are grateful for the tireless efforts of all agencies on site who are working under challenging and high-risk conditions.”

Current Situation:
• Four bodies have been recovered today.
• Search and rescue operations continue despite heavy rainfall.

MEC Buthelezi commended the professionalism and resilience of all teams on site and assured families that government will provide full support during this difficult time. Once recovery efforts conclude, a thorough investigation will follow to ensure accountability and prevent future tragedies.
