MTHUNZINI, 26 October 2025- KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta), Reverend Thulasizwe Buthelezi, joined thousands of mourners in Mthunzini to pay his final respects to the late Inkosi Alpheus Veleshowe Zulu, 84, a revered Inkosi and direct descendant of King Mpande.
The funeral service, held under the Ogagwini Traditional Authority, Mthunzini within the uMlalazi Local Municipality, was a solemn and dignified occasion attended by Amakhosi, Mayors, Members of the Zulu Royal House, and community members.
Inkosi Zulu ascended to the throne in 1969 following the passing of his father, Inkosi Umtwana Nicholas Zithume kaTetemane kaMgwendu kaMpande. He served his people with distinction for over five decades, making him one of the longest-serving Amakhosi in KwaZulu-Natal.
In his tribute, MEC Buthelezi described the late Inkosi as a “bridge builder and a doyen of wisdom” who played a pivotal role in mentoring young traditional leaders and fostering unity within the institution of traditional leadership. “Inkosi Zulu was a man of peace and vision. His leadership brought stability and development to his community, and his legacy will continue to inspire generations,” said MEC Buthelezi.
Under Inkosi Zulu’s reign, the community witnessed significant progress, particularly in the education sector. His unwavering commitment to education saw the establishment and support of schools, and he personally sponsored many young people to pursue further studies.
MEC Buthelezi also commended Inkosi Zulu for his efforts in preserving culture and heritage, noting that his leadership was instrumental during some of the most challenging periods in the province’s history. “Inkosi Zulu was a peacemaker whose wisdom and courage helped steer his people through turbulent times,” he added.
The MEC extended heartfelt condolences to His Majesty the King and the Zulu Royal House, acknowledging the loss of a dependable and diligent leader who served with honour and protected the interests of the King’s people.
Speaking on behalf of the Zulu Royal House, His Royal Highness Prince Thulani Zulu echoed the sentiments, describing Inkosi Zulu as a man who loved peace and unity.
Inkosi Alpheus Veleshowe Zulu passed away on Tuesday at the age of 84. His legacy of selfless service, commitment to education, and dedication to his people will be remembered and cherished.
