Ulundi, 29 September 2025 – The KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Disaster Management Centre, in collaboration with emergency services, is actively responding to multiple weather-related incidents across the province following heavy rainfall that began yesterday and is expected to persist into tomorrow.
While no major incidents have been reported thus far, the MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Reverend Thulasizwe Buthelezi, has urged residents to exercise extreme caution. “Roads are slippery, and several low-lying areas are at risk of localised flooding. We appeal to all road users and communities to remain vigilant and avoid unnecessary travel, especially in flood-prone zones,” said MEC Buthelezi.
One such incident occurred in Pietermaritzburg this morning, where a bakkie was swept off a low-lying bridge in Lincoln Meade. Fortunately, the driver managed to escape unharmed by swimming to safety. The MEC has reiterated the importance of not attempting to cross flooded bridges or rivers, as such actions pose serious risks to life.
In a separate event, fire and rescue teams responded swiftly to a factory fire in Pietermaritzburg. No injuries were reported, and the fire was successfully contained by emergency personnel.
The South African Weather Service has issued a Level 4 weather warning for severe thunderstorms across KwaZulu-Natal. The alert includes the possibility of strong, damaging winds, hail, and heavy downpours that may result in damage to infrastructure and pose risks to public safety.
Disaster Management teams remain on high alert and continue to monitor areas known to be vulnerable to weather-related incidents. Residents are encouraged to report emergencies to their local authorities and to follow updates from official government channels.
