Ulundi, 17 April 2025 – The KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Reverend Thulasizwe Buthelezi, has conveyed his condolences to the family affected by a tragic incident in Utrecht.
Yesterday, in ward 1 of the eMadlangeni Municipality, under the Amajuba District, a taxi attempting to cross the Ncamndane river was swept away by the strong current. Four individuals were in the vehicle at the time. Three occupants managed to escape to safety; however, a 33-year-old female passenger was unable to escape and drowned.
Reports received by the Department indicate that rescue teams were promptly dispatched to the scene. Efforts to recover the body were unsuccessful.
MEC Buthelezi has extended his deepest sympathy to the bereaved family and has directed disaster management teams to provide the necessary support during this difficult time.
Search and recovery operations are continuing.
MEC Buthelezi has urged residents to exercise vigilance as the persistent inclement weather conditions present a significant threat to life.
The province experienced level 4 and level 5 heavy rainfall on Tuesday and Wednesday, which posed a serious risk of flooding in low-lying areas. The Provincial Disaster Management Centre continues to assess reports from various Districts, with an update to be provided in due course.
Furthermore, MEC Buthelezi has appealed to individuals travelling during the upcoming Easter period to exercise caution by taking necessary safety precautions and staying informed about weather forecasts.
While the latest report from the weather service does not predict adverse weather conditions for the province during the Easter weekend, disaster management teams will remain on high alert.
