KZN Cogta and Social Partners to Build Nine New Houses for Nongoma Families Affected by Crater

NONGOMA, 12 April 2025 – The KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta), Reverend Thulasizwe Buthelezi, has announced that Cogta, in collaboration with social partners Old Mutual, the Red Cross, Al Imdaad Foundation, and the Themba Njilo Foundation, will be constructing a total of nine new houses for families residing in Ophiyaneni, Nongoma, who were affected by a recent crater.

This announcement follows a thorough assessment of the damage undertaken by the MEC during a visit to the affected households earlier today.

During his visit, MEC Buthelezi observed that the Mbatha family had tragically lost three of their houses due to the crater, which had also impacted neighbouring properties.

Accompanying MEC Buthelezi on this visit were the Mayor of Zululand, Councillor Khumalo, and the Mayor of Nongoma, Councillor Ndabandaba.

The collaborative effort with social partners Old Mutual, the Red Cross, Al Imdaad Foundation, and the Themba Njilo Foundation will ensure the construction of nine new homes for the affected families requiring relocation due to the impact of the crater.

The MEC’s visit also included the handover of essential relief supplies to 100 families in and around Nongoma who have been affected by the recent severe weather conditions.

Addressing community members, MEC Buthelezi stated, “It is crucial that we respond effectively to the needs of our communities in the aftermath of these adverse weather events. Our primary concern is to ensure the safety and well-being of the affected families, and we deeply appreciate the commitment of our social partners – Old Mutual, the Red Cross, Al Imdaad Foundation, and the Themba Njilo Foundation – in providing vital support through the construction of these new homes for those displaced by the crater and the provision of immediate relief.”

MEC Buthelezi further indicated his intention to return to the area to officially hand over the newly constructed houses, generously sponsored by these dedicated social partners.
