Abaqulusi, 3 February 2025 – The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) announces progress in restoring electricity to communities affected by the removal of transformers. This initiative is a result of a partnership between Eskom and the department.
In the Abaqulusi Municipality, the community of Mondlo has seen improvements, with 13 out of 18 transformers restored and electricity supply reinstated. This partnership between Eskom and KZN Cogta is addressing the electricity challenges faced by local communities.
KZN Cogta MEC Rev Thulasizwe Buthelezi expressed his satisfaction with the progress made, stating, “We are encouraged by the strides Eskom has made in restoring electricity to our communities. The restoration of transformers in Mondlo shows the positive outcomes that can be achieved through collaboration. We remain committed to working closely with Eskom to ensure that all affected areas receive the necessary support and services.”
The MEC will be visiting the areas today to provide relief following severe thunderstorms that left a trail of destruction. The MEC will be accompanied by senior officials from the provincial disaster management Centre.
The department will continue to monitor the progress of the restoration efforts and provide updates to the public as more transformers are brought back online.
