JOY AND CELEBRATION AS KZN COGTA MEC AWARDS 15 FULL BURSARIES TO DISADVANTAGED STUDENTS WHO EXCELLED IN THE 2024 MATRIC

It was a moment of joy and celebration as the KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Reverend Thulasizwe Buthelezi, awarded 15 full bursaries to students from disadvantaged backgrounds who excelled in their 2024 matric results.

The inspiring handover ceremony took place in Durban on Saturday, where MEC Buthelezi and parents gathered to offer their blessings and wish the students success as they prepare to pursue their careers at various institutions of higher learning across the country.

The bursary programme is part of the department’s initiative to support students from all municipalities, equipping them with skills to return and strengthen the local sphere of government.

The students have signed contracts with the department, which will manage all their administrative requirements until they complete their studies.

In addition to the bursaries, MEC Buthelezi announced an extra R2 000 clothing voucher for each student, generously sponsored by African Bank CEO, Kennedy Bungane.

Among the beneficiaries was Inkosi Lwazi Mdlalose, a young Inkosi in the province, who will be pursuing an LLB degree at the University of South Africa.

Addressing the students, MEC Buthelezi emphasised the importance of education in transforming lives.

“Education is the key that opens doors for everyone, regardless of their circumstances and background. It is inspiring to see these students embark on this journey, with some even travelling by plane to attend universities far from home. As a department, we are committed to fully supporting them. The bursaries will cover all costs, including a stipend, and we hope to increase the number of recipients in the future.”

MEC Buthelezi also expressed his admiration for Inkosi Mdlalose’s decision to further his education while serving his community.

“It is truly commendable that Inkosi Mdlalose is setting an example by prioritising education. Empowering Amakhosi with skills is one of our department’s top priorities. Despite his responsibilities to his clan and community, Inkosi Mdlalose has chosen to continue his studies for the benefit of his people. His commitment is an inspiration to us all.”

The MEC concluded by wishing all the students success.

“We wish all our students the very best as they embark on this new chapter.
Our department will ensure their journey is a smooth and enriching one, and we look forward to seeing them achieve great results and make meaningful contributions to their communities.”
