Media Statement – MEC Sithole-Moloi sends condolences following fatality in Fire Incident in Masinenge Informal Settlement, Port Shepstone**

13 August 2023 – A devastating fire occurred on Saturday evening, engulfing the Masinenge Informal Settlement in Port Shepstone. Local authorities responded swiftly to the emergency, and multiple agencies were on the scene to manage the situation and provide necessary support.

At approximately 23:20 last night, a distress call was received, leading to the activation of a coordinated emergency response effort by various agencies, including the Ray Nkonyeni Local Municipality and Ugu District.

The following entities were present at the scene to manage the crisis:- Law Enforcement- Margate SAPS (South African Police Service)- Forensic Pathologists- Ugu District Municipality- Fire Services- Ray Nkonyeni Local Municipality- Private Stakeholders: Wolf Security, South Broom SecurityTragically, we report the loss of one life in this incident.

Initial assessments indicate that approximately 70 informal dwellings have been affected by the fire.

A thorough headcount is scheduled to be conducted this morning to confirm the exact number of individuals impacted by this unfortunate incident.

Sector departments have been mobilized and are actively working to provide emergency relief and support to the affected residents.

We extend our gratitude to all agencies and individuals involved in this challenging situation, and we remain committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of our community members.

We are also concerned that this is the second incident in a very short space of time.

We urge the public to exercise caution and adhere to safety guidelines when dealing with electricity and any heating appliance.

Our thoughts and condolences go out to the family and friends of the deceased, and we will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available.
