KZNCOGTA MEC Commends Swift Response from Firefighters and Heroic Actions by Paramedics in Ruth First Highway Tragedy

Ulundi, 10 December 2025 – KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Reverend Thulasizwe Buthelezi, through the Provincial Disaster Management Centre has expressed his appreciation for the bravery and professionalism demonstrated by emergency responders during a tragic accident on the M4 Ruth First Highway near Umhlanga earlier today.

According to reports, KZN VIP Ambulance crews were first on the scene of the serious crash where a vehicle was engulfed in flames with two occupants trapped inside. Sadly, despite their relentless efforts, the female passenger could not be saved.

The MEC also commended the swift arrival and decisive action of the Fire Department, whose intervention prevented further devastation by extinguishing the blaze.

“The selfless dedication shown by these men and women in uniform is a testament to the spirit of service that defines our emergency personnel. Their bravery deserves our highest respect and recognition,” said MEC Buthelezi.

The driver was stabilised on scene and transported to a nearby medical facility for further treatment. SAPS has confirmed that investigations into the cause of the accident are underway.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of the deceased during this difficult time. We also wish the injured driver a speedy recovery,” the MEC concluded.
