Ulundi, 27 September 2025 – KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Reverend Thulasizwe Buthelezi, has placed disaster management teams on high alert ahead of severe weather conditions forecast for Sunday, 28 September 2025.
The South African Weather Service has issued a Level 4 warning for disruptive rainfall, expected to affect large parts of the province from 00:00 to 23:59. The warning includes the following municipalities:
- Abaqulusi, Alfred Duma (Indaka and Ladysmith), Dannhauser, Dr N. Dlamini-Zuma (Underberg), eDumbe, eMadlangeni, Endumeni, Greater Kokstad, Impendle, Ingwe, Inkosi Langalibalele (Escourt and Sobabili), Mpofana (Giants Castle and Mooi River), Msinga, Newcastle, Nkandla, Nquthu, Okhahlamba, Richmond, Msunduzi, Ubuhlebezwe, uMngeni, uMshwathi, Umvoti, and Umzimkhulu.
Heavy rainfall may result in flooding of roads and low-lying areas, damage to homes and infrastructure, disruption of essential services, and increased risk to human and animal life.
Provincial traffic authorities will be monitoring major routes and assist with safety measures.
Cogta MEC Reverend Thulasizwe Buthelezi has urged residents to remain vigilant, follow official updates, and take all necessary precautions to safeguard lives and property.
Communities living near rivers, in informal settlements, or with limited mobility are especially urged to prepare for possible emergencies.
The Provincial Disaster Management Centre is working closely with local municipalities to coordinate emergency responses.
Residents are advised to adhere to the following safety guidelines:
- Avoid crossing flooded roads or bridges, even if water appears shallow.
- Move vehicles to higher ground if parked in flood-prone areas.
- Prepare emergency kits with essential items such as medication, water, and important documents.
- Remain indoors unless evacuation is advised.
- Monitor updates from trusted sources including local radio stations, TV broadcasts, and official social media platforms.
