Ulundi, 4 September 2025 – The KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Reverend Thulasizwe Buthelezi, has commended the rapid and coordinated efforts of emergency response teams following a severe veld fire in uPhongolo yesterday, which left one person with critical burn injuries.
MEC Buthelezi praised the remarkable bravery and efficiency of the IPSS Medical Advanced Life Support Paramedics, community members, firefighters and air ambulance services who navigated dangerous conditions to reach and provide life-saving care to the victim.
“The dedication displayed by all first responders is a testament to the calibre and commitment of our emergency services in the province. We are immensely grateful for their swift action, which was crucial in stabilising the patient before airlifting him to a specialised facility,” said MEC Buthelezi. “We extend our heartfelt wishes to the victim for a full and speedy recovery, and our thoughts are with their family during this distressing time.”
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the persistent danger of veld fires facing the province. With dry and windy conditions expected to continue, the risk remains exceptionally high across many districts. MEC Buthelezi has issued a warning to the public, urging all residents to exercise extreme caution.
“We urge all residents, landowners, and motorists to be vigilant and adhere to all fire safety regulations.”
Members of the public are advised to take the following preventative safety steps:
• Do not start fires in open areas and never leave a fire unattended.
• Ensure that cigarette butts are disposed of safely and not thrown from moving vehicles.
• Create and maintain firebreaks around homes, farms, and communities.
• Be cautious when using machinery or equipment that can generate sparks.
• Immediately report any signs of a runaway fire to your local fire station
The Provincial Disaster Management Centre continues to monitor conditions closely and is working in collaboration with all district and local municipalities to ensure a high state of readiness. This partnership is vital for improving response capacity and safeguarding our communities against the threat of natural and man-made disasters.
“The safety of our communities is our foremost priority. We will continue to support our municipalities to ensure they have the resources needed to protect lives and property,” concluded MEC Buthelezi.
