KZN COGTA ACTIVATES DISASTER MANAGEMENT TEAMS IN ANTICIPATION OF INCLEMENT WEATHER ACCOMPANIED BY LIGHTNING AND DAMAGING WINDS

Ulundu, 04 September 2026 – KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Rev. Thulasizwe Buthelezi, has activated disaster management teams in the southern parts of the province in anticipation of severe thunderstorms.

The South African Weather Service has issued a Level 4 Warning for Severe Thunderstorms in the southern parts of the province, as well as a warning for damaging winds along the coast. The severe thunderstorms are expected to be accompanied by heavy downpours, excessive lightning and damaging winds throughout the day, which could lead to disasters.

Municipalities likely to be affected include Ray Nkonyeni, Umdoni, Umzumbe, uMuziwabantu, uMzumbe, uMzimkhulu, Johannes Phumani Phungula, and Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma.

MEC Buthelezi has urged communities to remain vigilant, as these weather conditions could cause flooding, infrastructure damage and other dangerous conditions.

“Our disaster management teams in the mentioned municipalities have been placed on high alert. We urge communities to adhere to the weather warning and follow all the necessary safety measures. Those in low-lying areas are advised to seek shelter in safe places. “Municipalities will make use of public facilities as safe havens, and communities will be allowed to move into these facilities should there be a need to do so. “We also wish to advise motorists to check the weather conditions before embarking on a journey and, where possible, to remain in a safe place until the weather conditions improve,” said MEC Buthelezi.
