ULUNDI, 11 May 2026 – In line with the commitment to empower the institution of traditional leadership within the province of KwaZulu-Natal, the MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Reverend Thulasizwe Buthelezi, will on Tuesday, 12 May 2026, hand over local economic development (LED) equipment to Amakhosi and Ondlunkulu.
The provision of this equipment is intended to enable traditional leaders to play an active role in shaping economic development within their communities.
The items to be handed over include A-frame marquees, chairs, mobile fridges, and catering equipment.
MEC Buthelezi has emphasized that this initiative is a key component of his objective to foster greater financial independence within the institution of traditional leadership.
By providing these resources, the Department aims to ensure that the institution has the necessary tools to support local initiatives.
This rollout has already been implemented for Amakhosi in the uMkhanyakude District, with the Ugu District being the latest beneficiary.
Other districts across the province are expected to follow as part of the scheduled rollout.
The MEC further noted that providing such support is central to the Department’s mandate, as the institution remains a pillar of unity and stability within communities.
