Ulundi, 28 September 2026 – KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Rev. Thulasizwe Buthelezi, has welcomed the payment of September salaries to all employees of the Zululand District Municipality following the municipality’s failure to pay employees on time.
MEC Buthelezi instructed the Head of Department, Mr Scelo Duma, to intervene and ensure that the matter was resolved within 48 hours. The municipality has confirmed that all employees have now received their full salaries.
MEC Buthelezi has warned that a recurrence of such incidents will not be tolerated, given the impact on employees and their dependants, as well as the potential implications for service delivery.
“Our Head of Department and his team will continue with the investigation to establish the root cause and ensure that this does not happen again. Municipalities must honour their obligations to employees and the communities they serve. Employees must have certainty that they will be paid on payday,” said MEC Buthelezi.
