KZN COGTA MEC HAILS HEROES FOR DARING RESCUE OF ELDERLY COUPLE IN MONTCLAIR BLAZE

uLundi, 17 July 2025 – The KwaZulu-Natal Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) MEC, Reverend Thulasizwe Buthelezi, today lauded the extraordinary bravery and selflessness of two Montclair residents, Derek Chirwa and David Phiri. Their swift and courageous actions saved an elderly couple from their burning home, yesterday 16 July.

The dramatic rescue unfolded when the duo noticed the couple’s residence engulfed in flames. Without hesitation, Mr. Chirwa and Mr. Phiri bravely forced open the door, enabling them to safely evacuate the 79-year-old resident and their partner from the raging inferno.

MEC Buthelezi commended the two men for their heroic efforts. The MEC believes that two men exemplify the very best of ubuntu. “Their quick thinking and immense courage prevented a tragic loss of life. This act of heroism serves as an inspiration to us all” said MEC Buthelezi.

The MEC also issued a vital reminder to all KwaZulu-Natal residents to exercise extreme vigilance as the province navigates the winter season. “The risk of structural fires significantly increases during colder months due to various factors, including the use of heating appliances. We urge everyone to take precautionary measures to ensure the safety of their homes and loved ones,” MEC Buthelezi added.
