Durban, 9 April 2025 – The Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, MEC, Reverend Thulasizwe Buthelezi has commended several municipalities within the province for their exceptional performance in the utilisation of the Municipal Infrastructure Grant (MIG).
Their good performance has resulted in an additional allocation of funding, totalling R30 million, being awarded to these high-achieving municipalities.
The allocation will be used to improve access to basic services such as roads, water and sanitation within these municipalities.
The MEC has commended the following municipalities for their outstanding performance who will receive the additional allocation:
- uMgungundlovu District Municipality: R10 million
- Zululand District Municipality: R6 million
- Ulundi Local Municipality: R3 million
- Okhahlamba Local Municipality: R1.5 million
- Greater Kokstad Local Municipality: R7 million
- uBuhlebezwe Local Municipality: R1.5 million
- uMzumbe Local Municipality: R1.5 million
The MEC further emphasised the Importance of prudent financial management and the diligent execution of infrastructure projects in fostering sustainable development and improving the quality of life for all residents of KwaZulu-Natal.
The success of these municipalities serves as an encouraging example for others to emulate.
The department will continue to monitor the performance of municipalities and provide the necessary support to enhance their capacity and ensure accountability.
